Boston Bruins Looking To Improve On The Blue Line, Must Consider Trading For Ryan McDonagh

The New York Rangers are looking to trade Ryan McDonagh.  Two teams are interested in the defenseman: the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins.  The Bruins could use him to improve the defense.  According to stanleycupofchowder.com, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said, “Ryan McDonagh, I mean he’s one of the biggest names on the market right now.  A lot of teams are looking at Boston and saying, A: they can do it, we mentioned Tampa and B: there may be a fit on the left side of their defense.”

McDonagh is an offensive defenseman.  He can skate, block shots, score goals, and he can feed his teammates on the open ice for goals.  McDonagh has played in the NHL for the last 7 seasons, all with the New York Rangers.  This season, he has 2 goals and 24 assists.  In his career, McDonagh has lit the lamp 51 times with 187 assists for 238 points.

And the Bruins could use an offensive defenseman.  They have Zdeno Chara who has 5 goals and 11 assists this season.  Adding McDonagh takes the pressure off of Chara to be the best offensive defenseman on the team.  The Bruins would have the best 2-blue line defensemen if they were to trade for McDonagh.  It would be difficult for teams to stop Chara and McDonagh.  They both check hard and can one-time a shot for a goal, especially on the power play.  It makes the Bruins a more dangerous team.

McDonagh salary is $4.7 million, a lot for a defenseman.  The Bruins wouldn’t have rental only for the rest of the season and have him under contract for next season as well.

In order to win the Stanley Cup, the Bruins must improve their play in front of the goaltenders.  They have played well but McDonagh might be the difference for them in the playoffs because of his ability to play on the power play and full strength situations.  The Bruins should place the call to the New York Rangers.  If the price is right, they should make a trade.  If not, they could always wait until the summer to engage in talks with the Rangers for McDonagh, if he is still available.
